Complete Windows Reinstall Preparation Guide (Before You Format)

Windows Reinstall Pre-Format Checklist Complete Guide

This guide covers everything. After reading this, you will know exactly what to do before wiping your PC: credentials, files, drivers, account info, activation, and post-install steps. Nothing left out.

Step 1: Backup All Credentials (1 minute)

This is the step most people skip and regret. Credentials cannot be recovered after formatting.

Fastest approach: one tool for everything

Advanced Password Recovery Suite exports browser passwords, WiFi keys, email credentials, FTP passwords, and Windows Credential Manager in one scan. Product Key Recovery Tool exports software license keys separately. Run both, save to USB.

  • ☐ Browser passwords (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, others) — use BPRT or built-in export per browser
  • ☐ WiFi network passwords — use netsh or APRS
  • ☐ Software license keys — use Product Key Recovery Tool
  • ☐ Email client passwords — use APRS
  • ☐ FTP server passwords (FileZilla, WinSCP) — use APRS
  • ☐ Windows Credential Manager entries — use APRS
  • ☐ Confirm Windows activation type (digital license or product key)

Step 2: Backup Personal Files

  • ☐ Documents folder
  • ☐ Desktop files and folders
  • ☐ Downloads folder (check for important files)
  • ☐ Pictures and Videos
  • ☐ Browser bookmarks (export from each browser as HTML)
  • ☐ Email data files (Outlook PST/OST, Thunderbird profile)
  • ☐ Game saves (check local AppData for game save folders)
  • ☐ Any custom software configurations

Step 3: Check Windows Activation Status

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings → System → Activation
  2. If it shows "activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account" — safe, no key needed
  3. If it shows a product key — save it with Product Key Recovery Tool
  4. Link your Microsoft account to the digital license if not already done

Step 4: Download Drivers Before Formatting

After a clean install, Windows may not have drivers for all your hardware. Download these from the manufacturer website before formatting:

  • GPU driver (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel)
  • Motherboard chipset driver
  • Audio driver (Realtek, etc.)
  • Network/WiFi adapter driver (critical if WiFi does not work after install)
  • Any other peripheral drivers

Step 5: Note Your Installed Software

Take a screenshot of your installed programs list (Settings → Apps → Installed apps) so you know what to reinstall. Or export with PowerShell:

Get-AppxPackage | Select Name, Version | Export-Csv -Path C:\SoftwareList.csv

Step 6: Note Account Details

  • ☐ Microsoft account email and password
  • ☐ Adobe account for Creative Cloud
  • ☐ Office 365 account
  • ☐ Any subscription service emails
  • ☐ Google account for Chrome sync

Post-Install Checklist

  1. Connect ethernet first for internet access
  2. Run Windows Update (may take multiple reboots)
  3. Install GPU and other drivers
  4. Import browser passwords from backup CSV
  5. Sign into Chrome/Edge/Firefox for sync restoration
  6. Import WiFi profiles from backup or reconnect manually
  7. Install and activate software using backed-up keys
  8. Restore personal files from external drive
  9. Configure email clients with backed-up credentials
  10. Configure FTP clients with backed-up server passwords

Frequently Asked Questions

With the right tools, credentials backup takes 1 minute, file backup takes 30-60 minutes depending on volume, driver downloads take 10-15 minutes. Total preparation: about 1.5 hours.

Yes. A clean install starts fresh. All installed software must be reinstalled. Use the software list you noted in Step 5 and the license keys from Product Key Recovery Tool.

For credentials, you may be able to recover them if the old drive still exists and was not wiped. For files, data recovery software may recover deleted files from the old partition if it was not overwritten.

A clean install is more thorough and resolves more issues, but requires following this full checklist. An in-place upgrade (reinstall without formatting) keeps files, apps, and settings but does not fix deep system problems.

You Are Ready to Format

Work through the checklist above sequentially. Do not skip the credentials step — it is the one you cannot undo after formatting. Download Advanced Password Recovery Suite and Product Key Recovery Tool now, run them both, save everything to USB, then format with confidence.
